Before signing an Occupation Right Agreement, it is mandatory under the Retirement Villages Act for every resident to receive advice from their own independent lawyer. This ensures you understand every part of your contract - from fees to exit payments.
Oversight & accountability
Each village has an independent Statutory Supervisor, who monitors financial soundness and compliance of the village operator.
The Retirement Commissioner provides further oversight of the system and leads consumer advocacy.
Governing law & code of practice
The Retirement Villages Act 2003 and Code of Practice set minimum standards for all operators.
These cover everything from contract disclosure to resident wellbeing and dispute resolution.
